At the beginning and again at the end of the walk, we cross the Calder River. This is attractive in its own right.
Some of the walking along the Charnley is relatively easy, some is relatively difficult. The scenery is always spectacular. Sometimes you walk next to the river, sometimes well above it. Sometimes you have to cross the river and sometimes you might choose to swim along. The dots in the centre of the photo below right are people in the water.
There are a number of interesting Aboriginal art sites along the river. Some of them are in styles we have seen no where else.
There is much more to the area than the gorge itself. There are side creeks to explore and wildlife to observe. The presence of small freshwater crocodiles in the gorge is a good indication that the larger, dangerous estaurine crocodiles are absent.
We had a spectacular light show one night on our trip in August 2001. That fire means that the vegetation will be a lot easier to walk through for the next few years. Camping on the sand next to the river meant that the fire presented no danger.
