Willis's Walkabouts Newsletter 38, November 2008

Kakadu -- Last Chance. I've been back from South Africa for less than a week. I've got less than two weeks to confirm or cancel two of our best trips.

In This Issue...
Kakadu -- Last Chance

I hate to cancel trips which people have booked months in advance. I hate it even more when those trips are among the best we can offer. The two trips listed below both have bookings. Neither can run unless we put out a food drop before the roads close for the wet season. Putting out the food drops is expensive in time, money and effort, so much so that I can't afford to do it unless I know the trips will run. It's now or never.

Last Chance on Two More Great Trips

One is almost here. One is almost full.

  • New Year in Kakadu: 27 December - 3 January

Two days after we guaranteed the departure for four people, one of them was forced to pull out for family reasons. I enjoy it so much that I'll be leading it myself. One of the other guides wants to come along as an unpaid assistant. You won't get a better client guide ratio than that.
The only way we can guarantee the best possible walk is to leave the decision as to where we go until we see how much rain we've had by mid December.
Special offer -- 20% off. We guaranteed the departure, so I'll run the trip even if I lose money. I'd rather not lose money so I'll offer a 20% discount to the next three who book. No other discounts apply with this offer.

  • Pilbara: Karijini National Park: 12-25 April, 2009
Unlike the trip in June, the water will be a pleasant temperature for swimming. This is a trip I've been dreaming about for a long time so I plan to lead it myself. This trip has only three places remaining. Book now and you can still get the maximum 20% advance purchase discount.
Kimberley Coast

The Kimberley Coast Explorer:15 March - 25 April is the longest single expedition that we offer in Australia. You see an incredible variety of scenery and a wealth of Aboriginal art sites. The fishing is great in several places along the way. It's in four sections, any of which can be done on its own.

The trip is too ambitious for most people so the full trip has run only once in the last five years. We may or may not be able to offer it again after 2009. We already have tentative bookings from six people. If they all confirm, it's a definite departure.

Special offer. Ayone booking before the end of the month will get the full 20% advance purchase discount and last year's price.

Want more info? Have a look at the illustrated trip report by Avis Pearce about the wettest Kimberley Coast trip we ever did. That report links to an a photo gallery of more photos from that trip. Back then we had to rely on a heavy radio for communication. Satellite phones make things lighter and easier these days.

Wildflowers of Kakadu

The best portable guide to wildflowers in Kakadu remains Kym Brennan's Wildflowers of Kakadu published in 1986. It's long out of print. When I did a google search, I found a copy for sale for US$41.65 plus a shipping fee of US$8.36. I can do better.

The book is soft cover, full colour, 13 cm tall x 23 cm wide, 127 pages, weight 325 grams. I've known the author for years. I've got a few copies which I can sell for $20 including postage to anywhere in Australia.

Get in quick if you want one. (For the right person, it would make a great Christmas gift.)

Special discounts -- combine them and save even more.

Book now and save! As in the past, if you are one of the first three people who quote this newsletter when booking any Australian trip within two weeks of when we sent it out, you will get an extra 10% discount on any trip where your total discounts are 10% or less. You'll get an extra 5% off if your total discounts are 15% or more. This offer does not apply to the five trips listed in the earlier sections of this newsletter.

Note. There has to be a limit. The maximum total discount on any trip is 35%.
